Y’know, on the homeless w/pets thing… for the most part, I don’t have a huge problem with it. Quite frankly, I’ve seen fewer homeless people who don’t treat their pets right as people with homes. I’ve also never seen a “homeless” pet that was badly behaved. When you’re with your pet 24/7, I suppose you have ample opportunity to train it right.
I worry about the potential lack of food, veterinary care & shelter, but… not one of those so-called “homeless” dogs ever looks unhappy to me. That’s a lot more than I can say for a lot of pets.
I agree with Donna. All the abused pets I’ve ever seen have come from people with homes – it doesn’t stop them from chaining their dogs in the backyard 24/7 with no cover. Most homeless people I’ve seen with pets treat them with love and caring.
There is a week-long feature currently running in the Vancouver Sun regarding the homeless in Vancouver. Each day traces the life of a homeless individual or the lives of a homeless couple. Today’s featured a young couple living on the streets who finished high school, don’t drink or do drugs, and enjoy reading above all else. The woman collects welfare and more than half of her income goes to feeding their adopted dog and rabbit because, as she says, people don’t hand out food for homeless animals, just homeless people. Apparently a woman at the Vancouver SPCA is very familiar with many homeless who have adopted pets and will vouch for them if people have a problem with it. The bunny was rescued from a park by the couple when they heard that crackheads were torturing the park rabbits, and the dog was a hungry stray to begin with and they now feed him.
The cutest part of the story was that when they had extra money all they would do is try to go to the Aquarium… but often they cannot go because there is no one to sit their pets!!
Aw, that’s sweet. When it is stories like those, of course I have no issue. But I’m sure that there are some homeless people who have adopted animals for the purpose of making more money panhandling, and that I do have a problem with.
