Disappointed

I tried to eat pizza that had meat on it today, and it made me feel sick. I had plain cheese pizza instead.

I’ve been trying to cut down on the amount of meat that I eat, and only buying meat to cook at home from that butcher I blogged about a few weeks ago. But, and I do not know if this is true as I was told by someone else, apparently the same butcher also sells fois gras. If this is true, I will no longer be purchasing from them. I will also be informing the manager/owner of the reason why. I’m going to start investigating other butchers to see if I can find a replacement.

My mum said to me recently that I would probably be much happier living in Great Britain or Europe as they have much stronger laws around animal cruelty, in particular the ways that food animals must be treated. The Wiki article says that Austria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Turkey, Holland, Ireland, Israel, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom have banned fois gras. The link that this information is cited from also says, “The European Union, which has already imposed a ban on other inhumane farming practices such as veal crates and gestation crates, is considering a ban on foie gras as well.”

My mum is right. There may come a day where my conscience pushes me to emigrate due to this issue. It’s a good thing I have citizenship so that I could just pick up and move.

Just a little FYI for yah!!

Foie gras is banned from being produced in the UK, but many shops and restaurants import and sell it (which is not prohibited), particularly during the festive period. Consequently, birds elsewhere in the world are suffering to satisfy UK demand for foie gras. A ban on the sale of foie gras in the United Kingdom would significantly reduce bird suffering.

    Thanks for the info, Yvonne.

I was just about to say, there are lots of places in Europe where you’ll be surprised at the treatment vegetarians receive. My sister just got back from living over in Germany for a year and really, in most places, they just look at you funny if you try and tell them you don’t eat meat.

But congrats on cutting down on the meat in your diet. As a vegetarian I can tell you that you feel SO MUCH better without that grease and fat and other crap. =)

Oh, but Sara, it’s not that I don’t eat meat. I have no problem with the food chain existing – what I do have a problem with is the way that the animals are kept and slaughtered. That’s why I was only buying free range stuff from the butcher, but it defeats the purpose (I think) if they are also selling fois gras.

Having been to Europe a few times, especially Central Europe on my last trip, I know the feeling that they have around vegetarians. But again, it’s not so much the eating as it is all the other stuff, and the EU and Great Britain tend to have stricter laws about that stuff than we do in North America.
