Things that last
July 12, 2008Erin No Comments »In just over an hour, I will be watching one of my oldest friends (in terms of length of friendship, not actual age) get married.
We met when we were 13. We used to take our dogs for walks around the neighbourhood as an excuse to smoke cigarettes. We used to sneak out at night and go wander the neighbourhood, looking at the stars and pondering deep thoughts. We used to get ridiculously drunk and eat Subway at two in the morning. We used to climb on the roof of the elementary school, just because we could.
He was my first boyfriend, and my first kiss. It lasted about 3 weeks and we realized that this wasn’t what it was about. We agreed to be best friends instead, and that agreement has lasted 15 years.
Today, I watch him get married. He’s the first of my close friends to take this grown up step. It’s weird. I’ve decided to hold off on the makeup until after the wedding because I’m sure I’ll cry a wee bit. I always cry at weddings, but one of my best friends? I should make sure I pack some tissues, too.
