Perfectly Logical Calculations

For anyone following the US election lead-up, this is a good read. Not only is it from one of my favourite feminist blogs but Melissa McEwan is one of my favourite bloggers. She’s got a way with words, that one.

What Melissa (and many other US progressives/liberals) refuse to see is that Barack Obama is NOT a progressive/liberal.
At the very best, he’s a progressive conservative and an example of the most progressive that US politics get.
He is not a liberal, because the American people will not elect a liberal. You cannot be elected in the US without being mostly conservative in many of your views.
He is, however, the best candidate in this race to be able to move the US a little more to the right. He’s got 7/8 more feminist street cred than John McCain would ever want.
It bothers me most that even with all the shit that Hillary Clinton put up with in this campaign that anyone would think she would do any better or be any better at any of the issues that concern Melissa McEwan.

err… that should say either “toward what is right” or “to the left”.
Pain killing drugs are, umm, bad.

To my recollection, Melissa is not saying anything about Hilary in this post. What she is saying is that just because Obama may possibly be a little better in some ways than McCain, that doesn’t make him someone who is going to stand up for feminist issues. His campaign has had its share of sexism and misogyny and that means that voting for Obama, while still obviously preferred over McCain, still necessitates a putting aside of feminist issues.
