Animal Health Technologist

I went to an info session at Douglas College this week regarding their Animal Health Technologist program and finally, finally, I have found what I want to do.

Unfortunately, I have pre-reqs that need to get done before I can apply, as well as 80 hours of volunteer time in vet clinics, and the cut off date for registration for this September is Feb 15. That means I’ll be applying for September 2011. However, as they only take 30 students per year, I figure I’ll need the next year to get some solid volunteer work under my belt and hopefully get some awesome letters of recommendation as well.

I have to take Bio and Chem 11, and a science 12 which will most likely be Bio. I may have to take a math course as well – I have to check what my math was in high school and whether it is acceptable or not. The good thing is that high school courses are free, and both VCC and Cap offer them so I will have some options as to scheduling.

I’m probably going to suck it up at the Green Cult until I start the program, which sucks but it doesn’t make sense to do something else making less money for the next year and a half. I want to save as much as possible so that I don’t have to take as much out in student loans. The AHT program is 2 years and it is full time – 16 credits per semester. Whew! I already know that I will not be able to work at all while maintaining a course load that heavy, so the more I have socked away in the bank before I start, the happier I will be.

I feel so happy to have found something that not only I am passionate about, but I can actually do. Everything else I had looked into needed so much extra schooling before I could even start the program I was looking at that it just wasn’t worth it. To do four pre-reqs before learning to be a nurse to animals? That I can handle.

One of the parts of the program is the large animal portion and we get to go to a goat farm! I <3 goats. And I get to buy scrubs and a lab coat! Just so full of awesome – I can’t wait to get started.
