Due to unforeseen and unexpected circumstances, Ziggy’s new home had to give him up. I met them today down at Peace Arch Park to bring him back home. I brought Maia as well, so that she could meet them, and the two dogs romped around a bit. Then we decided that it would totally be a good idea for them to walk to my car with me. In retrospect, obviously not, but since we’re all law-abiding citizens it didn’t occur to us that they would be crossing the border illegally.
So off we went, wandering up to my car. As we were standing there chatting before they walked back and I drove home, an undercover police car pulled up, lights going. Then three more police cars pulled up! Turns out someone who lives along 0 Ave called 911 on us! Anyway, the first guy who was on scene and another officer who stayed until the end were really nice and understanding about how we made a stupid mistake and that was all. When I thanked them for being nice, one of them responded with the fact that a lot of the law is about intent. Yes, we broke the law but clearly our intent was not to smuggle drugs or money over the border. (Just a dog, but shh.) However, they did warn us that Canadians entering that park are in US territory and could end up in the same situation as we were now, as having illegally entered the country. So although we thought it was cool that Canadians and Americans could mingle together in that park – turns out not so much. *lol*
Learning of the day: even when there’s no sign, don’t cross the border, and always be polite to police officers.
